Laurel Lee Phelps, 81, Owatonna

1941-2023 Owatonna-Laurel Lee Phelps, age 81, of Owatonna, MN was called home by her Heavenly Father September 13, 2023. She was able to spend her last days at home, per her wishes, due to exceptional care from the Mayo Hospice program and her family.

Laurel was born November 27, 1941 to Maynard and Mabel Flaaen in West Concord, MN.

She married Darrell Phelps on December 5, 1959 at West Concord First Baptist Church. Laurel and Darrell were blessed with three sons, 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Laurel was an ER nurse until her retirement from Allina Hospitals in 1999. She provided comfort and knowledge through medical journeys for many friends and family members. Laurel’s great granddaughters often requested Grandma’s knowledge for any scrape or ailment. Laurel was a nurse to the very end, requesting her stethoscope several times so she could listen to her own her heart.

Laurel loved spending time with family and friends. Laurel and Darrell made many trips with special friends. She enjoyed solving crosswords, puzzles, knitting and making stained glass.

She is survived by 2 sons, Steven (Michelle), Kent (Joleen), and daughter-in-law Cathy. Her four grandchildren Alisha (Rob), Karley (James), Taylor and Mathew and great grandchildren, Kamryn, Karsyn, and Oliver. Her sister, Mary Lou Sorn (Larry), brother-in-law Dale Phelps (Karen) and sister-in-law Connie Avery (Chuck) and several close nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A visitation will be held on Friday, September 15 from 4:00-7:00 pm at Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church in Owatonna, MN. Laurel’s family invites you to attend a Celebration of Laurel’s life on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at 2:00 at Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church in Owatonna, MN with an hour of visitation prior to the service.
