Rick Bussler, Owner
Rick Bussler has been the publisher of Steele County Times since November 2009 when he took over the newspaper operation from Evans Publishing. Since that time, he has expanded the newspaper into a countywide paper serving all of Steele County. Besides Blooming Prairie, Steele County Times covers Ellendale, Medford, Owatonna and all points in between. During this period, the circulation of Steele County Times has skyrocketed to more than 2,100 readers each week. When Bussler took over, the circulation was less than 1,000. The paper has also experienced tremendous growth in other areas, including the size of the paper. Prior to 2009, the paper averaged 14 pages and now it runs between 20-24 pages each week.
Bussler is no stranger to the journalism field. He started out working at his hometown newspaper, the Brownton Bulletin, in high school. He later attended Minnesota State University- Mankato where he obtained a degree in mass communications. After college, Bussler went to work for KAAL-TV in Austin Minnesota as a news reporter/anchor. He later became a police officer in Waterloo, Iowa and Lakeville, where he still works in addition to owning the newspaper.
During Bussler's tenure, Steele County Times has developed into a state and national award-winning newspaper. In January 2013, the newspaper won 10 state awards, including general excellence.
He also took over operation of the News-Enterprise of Claremont/West Concord/Dodge Center in November 2012.
